Following his fellowship, he joined the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina as the Director of the Retina Service prior to joiningRetina Institute of the Carolinas. He followed his residency with fellowship training in both pediatric ophthalmology and vitreoretinal disorders at Johns Hopkins, receiving the prestigious Heed Foundation Award. He received the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician Recognition Award during his residency.
His interest in diabetic retinopathy lead him to residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was awarded a fellowship by the American Diabetes Association for his research in diabetic retinopathy and went on to receive the coveted Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society Award. He attended the Duke University School of Medicine during which time he continued his interest in medical research. He graduated with honors receiving the prestigious Pew Research Fellowship and performed advanced biological research at Princeton University. He attended the University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate studies. Samiy has had numerous publications and has lectured internationally. Samiy went into private practice and in 2001 founded Retina Institute of the Carolinas. He attended medical school at Boston University where he received the Hewlett-Packard Award for "top medical graduate." He completed his medicine internship at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital and remained at Harvard Medical School for ophthalmology residency and fellowship training in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery. While at Harvard, he won the prestigious Olney Fellowship to do basic science research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory under the directorship of Nobel Prize-winner James Watson. He completed his undergraduate degree with honors at Harvard College.
